Masterclass by IFCN: Neuromuscular Disorders Associated with Cancer, and with its Treatments
Professor Jorge Gutierrez Godoy will present:
Neuromuscular Disorders Associated with Cancer, and with its Treatments
Neuromuscular complications of cancer include disorders of both the central and peripheral nervous system that can be evaluated by clinical neurophysiologists. The peripheral disorders may affect nerves (including nerve roots, plexuses, and cell bodies), the neuromuscular junction and the muscle fibers. These disorders can be classified as a direct or remote (paraneoplastic) effect of a primary malignancy or as an iatrogenic effect of treatment. In this review we will discuss the pathophysiology of the disorders and their most frequent clinical presentations and describe the side-effects of frequent treatments like neurotoxicity associated with chemotherapeutic agents, the radiation-related nervous system injuries, effects of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICPI) therapy and effects of cancer surgery.
